The challenge

There were many existing users of CliniSys’ earlier LIMS solutions as well as users of other third party LIMS solution across the estate servicing four NHS Foundation Trusts.

The outcomes

An incremental LIMS consolidation programme to implement a single networked WinPath Enterprise across all sites and laboratories

Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is an NHS contractual joint venture between the following NHS Foundation Trusts:

  • Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals
  • Frimley Health
  • Royal Berkshire
  • Royal Surrey County Hospitals

LIMS Project

An incremental LIMS consolidation programme to implement a single networked WinPath Enterprise across all sites and laboratories.

Across the BSPS estate, there were many existing users of CliniSys’ earlier LIMS solutions, WinPath v5 and LabCentre as well as users of other third party solutions. The programme of work was comprised of two phases:

Phase one, to upgrade to WinPath Enterprise across three sites that were previously WinPath v5 users, was followed by phase two to extend this upgrade to replace LabCentre and an in-house solution at the two remaining sites. The aim of this project was to provide a single consolidated LIMS system based upon a centrally agreed configuration with BSPS. This model also allows for BSPS to bring on board other Trusts over time and as required in line with the standardised configuration.

Dr Ian Fry (previous Director of Pathology, BSPS) noted that: “The LIMS is a mission critical component in underpinning our project transformation aims to have an integrated, high quality pathology service that maximises innovation and technology while driving efficiency and effectiveness. CliniSys’ migration of our multiple LIMS onto a single instance of WinPath Enterprise, gives us the necessary levels of functionality and flexibility to all aspects of the service.” CliniSys has built a strong and proactive partnership with BSPS, supporting continued growth and evolution and working in close collaboration at Board level, to enable the network to secure further benefits and to build and maintain competitive advantage.

Nicola Newman, Surrey Pathology Service’s Managing Director was keen to work in partnership with CliniSys to develop the CliniSys Pathology Relationship Management Solution (PRM), commenting that “being able to provide our customers and end users with a personalised and interactive service is of paramount importance. CliniSys’ PRM solution replaces our manual and labour-intensive processes and supports the growth of new service offerings, assists in customer retention and maximises operational efficiency”.
